The Center
Erdenesiin Khuree arts and Mongolian Calligraphy center.
A center with tradition at its heart...
Erdenesiin Khuree, as one of the only Mongolian Calligraphy centers in the world, is deeply rooted in Mongolian traditions and the perpetuation of its culture notably its unique nomadic way of life. Composed solely of gers - the Mongolian word for 'yurt'- linked together by wooden pathways, the visitor is led into a peaceful atmosphere combining art, nature, and architectural curiosity.

Based in Kharkhorin (or Kharkhorum), the former capital and administrative pole of the Mongol Empire during the great Khans epoch following Chinggis Khan's conquests, the center's mission is in perfect tune with the historical charge of its location. Indeed, it is Chinggis Khan himself who introduced the Mongol Bhichig, the script used in Mongolia as a writing system (for more information, see the part on calligraphy).

... closely tied to the history of its city
and connected to the world.
The center is divided into several exhibitions changed regularly which showcase the variations in calligraphy through the style and personal expression of the artists. Erdenesiin Khuree does not only receive Mongolian calligraphers. It welcomes artists from all around the world whether they be calligraphers painters... At its core is the work of Tamir Samandbadraa, a well-known calligrapher at the origin of this initiative.

Erdenesiin Khuree has also opened an artist's residency called the "residence of the steppes" to offer international artists a privileged place conducive to creation and a chance to add their work to the wide range of exhibitions of the center.
